What Are Ear Tubes (Grommets)?

Ear tubes—also called grommets or tympanostomy tubes—are tiny tubes inserted into the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear and allow trapped fluid to drain. They are one of the most common ENT surgeries worldwide, especially in children with chronic ear infections or hearing loss caused by fluid behind the eardrum.

When Is Ear Tube Surgery Recommended?

Your ENT may recommend ear tube placement if you or your child experiences:

  • Recurrent ear infections (3+ in 6 months, or 4+ in a year)
  • Persistent fluid in the ear (glue ear/otitis media with effusion)
  • Hearing loss related to fluid build-up
  • Ear pressure or fullness affecting daily life
  • Speech or developmental delay linked to chronic ear problems

How the Procedure Works

Ear tube placement is a short, safe procedure performed under general anesthesia (in children) or local anesthesia (in selected adults).

  • A tiny incision (myringotomy) is made in the eardrum
  • Any trapped fluid is gently removed
  • A small ventilation tube (grommet) is placed to keep the eardrum open
  • The tube allows air in and fluid out until the Eustachian tube resumes normal function

Recovery & Aftercare

Most children go home the same day and can return to school or nursery within 1–2 days. Adults usually recover just as quickly.

  • Ear drops may be prescribed after surgery
  • Avoid swimming without ear protection unless cleared by your doctor
  • Follow-up visits monitor tube function and hearing
  • Tubes usually fall out naturally after 6–12 months as the eardrum heals

Benefits of Ear Tube Surgery

The goal of ear tube surgery is to break the cycle of infections and fluid build-up, allowing normal hearing and development.

  • Reduces frequency and severity of ear infections
  • Improves hearing and speech development in children
  • Relieves ear fullness and pressure
  • Safe, quick, and effective in experienced ENT hands

No. While most common in children, adults with chronic ear infections or Eustachian tube dysfunction may also benefit from ear tube placement.
Yes—in a positive way. By draining fluid and ventilating the middle ear, tubes usually improve hearing almost immediately after surgery.
Most tubes last 6–12 months and fall out on their own. If they remain longer, your ENT may recommend removal.
Some children may need repeat ear tube placement if infections or fluid build-up return after the first tubes fall out. Your ENT will monitor progress at follow-ups.
No. The procedure is done under anesthesia, so patients do not feel pain. Some mild ear discomfort may occur for a day or two afterwards but is easily managed.
